NARRATOR

For Rob Haynes, the Vancouver Block still holds its glamour from its modernist heyday.

ROB HAYNES

You know, I talked about the dreamland of going to the Orpheum. My other dreamland was going to the Vancouver Block, because that was the height of business, because that’s where my dad had his office. And he was on the top floor, and that building has so much marble in it, it’s unbelievable. And it’s a beautiful, beautiful building inside.

And then when I went into business, because I started my own theatrical agency, I needed an office. And lo and behold, I got an office in the Vancouver Block.

I always felt, and maybe it was because I was in the penthouse, but I always felt I was on top. I was on top of the world. I felt if I was in a prestigious building, a solid building, I’d be part of a solid business.

NARRATOR

After so many years spent working in the Vancouver Block, a little piece of the building now resides in the Haynes family home.

ROB HAYNES

When you’ve been in a building as long as my dad was, because he was there like 40s years. You know, if you need something, they just give it to you. And my mother used to make chocolates. And of course, you have to hand-dip chocolate. What do you hand-dip it on? You need a nice slab of cold marble. Well, lo and behold, we still, in our family, have this slab of marble from the Vancouver Block that we still dip chocolates just before Christmas.
