The single-screen Ridge Theatre at Arbutus Street and 16th Avenue opened in 1950, and has been a Kitsilano neighbourhood institution for decades. But like other small movie theatres, the Ridge has had trouble remaining profitable in recent years.
In March 2012, Cressey Development Group announced plans to tear down the historic Ridge to make space for a condo development featuring ground-floor retail beneath concrete condominiums.
After the announcement from Cressey was made public, Ridge Theatre operators Festival Cinemas pledged to continue screening films at the neighbourhood theatre until condo construction begins.
