The Cecil Hotel
The Cecil Hotel, distinctive for bold, bright-green lettering on its tall vertical neon sign, opened on the south end of Granville Street in 1909.
Almost exactly 100 years later in January 2010, topless women circulated the bar amidst shrimp cocktails at a closing party for the hotel-turned-strip bar. Real estate developers hosted the catered affair.
The Cecil is now the site of a 23-storey LEED-certified condo development called the Rolston. Alongside renovations for the nearby Yale Hotel, the Rolston is the first phase of a wave of real estate development designed to make over the south end of downtown.
